Scytale, Incorporated was founded in 2000 as a small technology company stationed in Ellicott City, Maryland. Since that time, we have expanded our offices and doubled our staff. As a result, our client base is extensive. We have also narrowed our focus on application product lines. With major government agencies, Scytale has developed the CARDS family of communication security equipment inventory tracking systems to keep a handle on the nation's cryptographic gear.
Our main office is currently located in Columbia, Maryland. We have also recently opened a second office in Westminster, Maryland. From these locations, Scytale can service, but is not limited to, the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas.
The name Scytale is derived from an Ancient Cryptographic device described as being used by the Spartans during their military campaigns. A Scytale consisted of a thin paper or leather strip, wrapped around a wooden dowel.
| Messages were written along the length of the strip on the dowel. After the strip was unwrapped, the message could only be clearly read by wrapping the strip around a dowel of the same dimensions. Couriers hid the strip in (or sometimes even as) their belts or sashes. |
